BDP is a multi-disciplinary award-winning design practice, established in the UK in 1961 and now a worldwide practice with more than 1,200 professional staff in the UK, Europe, Middle East, Asia and North America. BDP’s Singapore studio established in 2018, acts as a hub for BDP’s Asia business, which includes studios in Shanghai and Delhi, both established in 2010.
In 2016 BDP became part of the Nippon Koei group, which created a platform for the accelerated growth of BDP, including within Asia.
BDP’s work covers all major development sectors, from Urbanism to Retail, Education, Housing, Healthcare, Mixed-Use, Transport, Workplace and Leisure. We also have particular strengths in masterplanning and sustainability and are leading users of BIM in the design industry.
The Urbanism sector is an existing strength of BDP studios in Shanghai and Delhi and is a major potential market in Southeast Asia. Therefore the opportunity now exists for a talented urbanist to join the young but fast-growing BDP Singapore team, to provide leadership of the Urbanism sector across BDP’s Asia studios, to win work and expand the sector in Southeast Asia in particular and to be a key part of the development and growth of the Singapore studio.
The Role
- Leadership of the Urbanism sector in Southeast Asia;
- Development of a sector business plan in collaboration with urbanism teams across the Asia studios, aligned with BDP values, in accordance with strategic objectives set by the BDP Principal responsible for the Urbanism sector within BDP, and integrated with the BDP Singapore studio business plan;
- Implementation of the Urbanism sector plan in Asia, working with studio leaders in Singapore, Delhi and Shanghai, securing planned growth and meeting quality and commercial objectives;
- Raising the profile of BDP Urbanism and our Urban Design Profession in Asia, through thought leadership and active involvement in relevant professional and client networks;
- Winning work and supporting bids across Asia, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia, taking a selective approach to opportunities, agreeing bid strategies including engagement of BDP expertise in other global locations if required, drawing on BDP project experience and marketing support, to ensure a high success rate on bids;
- Working with studio Business Directors to prepare commercial proposals, robust contracts and project delivery plans that reduce and mitigate risk and secure profitable outcomes;
- Developing a People strategy that develops Urbanism skills and capacity in Asia and that draws on the people development resources and programmes provided by BDP;
- Leadership of major projects, bringing together and co-ordinating multi-disciplinary teams including external sub-consultants;
- Promotion of design quality in the Urbanism sector in Asia including delivery of award winning work.
About you
You will have :
Relevant university qualifications and professional training, for example as an Urban Designer / Masterplanner or an Architect. Other professional backgrounds (e.g. Urban Designer, Transportation Planner, Development Surveyor, Project Manager) will be considered if significant relevant skills and experience can be demonstrated;A minimum of 8 years relevant experience in practice (i.e. not including any years in university education), with extensive and demonstrable examples of planning, urban design and masterplanning studies at a variety of scales from city block to district, citywide and regional / sub-regional scales;Significant experience of urbanism projects within Southeast Asia of various scales and sizes;Excellent design skills and a proven ability to lead and produce high quality masterplans.Excellent presentation, report writing and drawing / graphic skills;Excellent client networking and business development skills;Excellent client management and work-winning skills;A knowledge of and interest in the urbanism field and of current challenges and opportunities, and a strong desire to secure better outcomes for cities and communities through planning and design;A thorough understanding of urban dynamics, including economics, real estate, governance, infrastructure, environment and social matters, such that you can work with all relevant stakeholders to develop effective, integrated plans and proposals;Experience of developing and leading professional teams;Experience of developing and implementing business plans and growth strategies;Experience of managing fees and resources to deliver profitable work that exceeds client expectations;A commitment to BDP in Singapore and a willingness to travel across the Asia region as required to carry out the role;Whilst we are keen to attract international candidates, ideally you will also have had some experience of living and working in Singapore or within Southeast Asia.Singapore citizens and candidates who do not require work visas preferred.What BDP offers :
