Roles & Responsibilities

The Head of Communications, Asia-Pacific (ex-China) is responsible for leading on all aspects of communications related to both the World Gold Council’s corporate activity and specific sector programmes, across the Asia-Pacific (ex-China), in pursuit of the following communications and business objectives :

  • Build brand awareness of the World Gold Council.
  • Enhance our reputation as an authority on the global gold mining industry and global gold market.
  • Communicate and drive understanding of the case for gold investment to retail and institutional investors and the official sector (central banks).
  • Position the World Gold Council and our Membership as stewards for responsible gold mining and a force for positive ESG change in the industry.
  • Create awareness and understanding of the need for digitalisation and market reform in the global gold industry (our ambitious Gold247™ plan).
  • Position gold as an accessible, trusted investment asset.

We are focused on the following audiences :

  • Institutions – Official sector, investment consultants, fiduciary managers, client advisors, pension funds, asset managers, private wealth managers and family offices.
  • Individuals – Retail gold investors, jewellery market (noting that jewellery is not a priority focus, but is an important aspect of the gold market)
  • Industry – members of the global gold industry (miners, refiners, bullion banks, other gold industry and trade organisations).
  • Key responsibilities and accountabilities :

    Asia-Pacific (ex-China)

    Press office and media engagement : Work with our PR agency to manage the Asia-Pacific arm of our busy press office and position the World Gold Council and our Asia-Pacific spokespeople as the authority for informed comment on the gold markets in tier 1 media outlets, with the objective of placing gold into wider investment commentary. You will build, maintain and strengthen a series of relationships with important Tier 1 media especially within the investment space and key business media. In this role, you will be encouraged to actively monitor for emerging news stories and trends that affect the gold market both locally and globally.

  • Market strategist & spokesperson programme : Help execute a comprehensive, proactive spokesperson engagement programme for global and Asia-Pacific based leadership, including our Market Strategist, using our research, market knowledge and insights to position WGC as a thought leader and important component of the investment debate. Work with spokespeople and the wider communications team to develop messages and pertinent ‘points of view’ in response to breaking news and emerging market trends, as appropriate.
  • Social & content : Work with the global social and content lead to develop and oversee Asia-Pacific produced social media content for our corporate channels and also our key Asia-Pacific spokespeople who have their own corporate accounts.
  • Events : Support in identifying, negotiating and preparing for conference and speaking opportunities relevant to the gold, precious metals, mining and investment industries.
  • CEO profiling and executive communications : Identify and propose opportunities for CEO profiling for our Gold247 programme which is focused on supply chain integrity and the digitalisation of gold.
  • Local corporate communications advisor : Be a sound advisor to senior Asia-Pacific colleagues. You will effectively manage risks to the organisation – reviewing and proposing proactive steps to mitigate issues that arise.

    Working closely with the the global communications and marketing team and other key internal stakeholders, you will develop and execute high quality public relations and communications plans that support global initiatives, localised for the Asia Pacific market (with a focus on Singapore, Japan and Australia) and in line with corporate messaging and objectives. Some example projects and responsibilities include :

  • Audience mapping & targeting : Coordinating with our global investment and research teams to identify opportunities within target audiences to engage with our proprietary content.
  • Content generation : Help create ideas and compelling content that fits with our key objectives, identifying and filling gaps, and giving a particular focus on our digital and social media channels. Draft and edit media materials including press releases, briefing documents and Q&A documents.
  • Global research and publications : Partnering with the research and marketing team, develop integrated campaigns to effectively launch our research / initiatives and deliver key messages to target audiences through earned, owned and shared channels.
  • ESG : Work with our dedicated ESG team to identify opportunities to amplify their activities in support of building credibility and trust in Large-Scale Gold Mining’s ESG credentials, and creative storytelling and campaign ideation to build awareness of gold’s role in society and technology.
  • Internal communications : Champion and support the implementation of World Gold Council internal communications strategy and activities.
  • Brand : Be the global brand custodian in your market, working with the global brand lead to ensure all branded communications (including electronic, digital and online) are on brand and of the highest standard.
  • Impact : Champion our measurement and evaluation system using data and analytics to show how corporate affairs is making an impact in the gold and wider investment industries.
  • Experience and Skills

    Experience

  • 10-15 years’ experience in communications, to include the field of financial services.
  • Experience in some or all of the key markets (Singapore, Australia and Japan) would be advantageous.
  • A solid understanding of financial markets and industry trends, and an ability to leverage these insights will be an advantage.
  • Media relations expertise, you are an accomplished news hound with sound judgement and a keen eye for a good story.
  • Practiced and confident working with senior spokespeople.
  • Strong media contacts, especially in the financial services sector.
  • Practiced at taking a multi-channel ‘publisher’ approach to communications.
  • Expertise in amplifying content on social media channels (paid and unpaid) including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
  • Command of using data and analytics to evidence communications and campaign impact and results.
  • Comfortable working within a small yet global organization with extensive reach and influence.
  • Experienced in a multi-cultural business environment and ability to expand horizons beyond Asia-Pacific (ex-China).
  • Competent in managing external agencies.
  • Skill set

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a knack for storytelling.
  • A strategic thinker with the ability to generate ideas, lead stakeholders in implementing them, and objectively analyse the results in the context of future efforts.
  • Self-motivated, driven and enthusiastic with high standards.
  • An outgoing and collaborative communicator who can build effective relationships inside and outside the organisation; experience of a matrix / partnership model an advantage.
  • Personal characteristics of resilience, sound judgement, integrity and the enthusiasm to embrace opportunities to learn and develop.

    Qualifications

    Bachelors' Degree required

    Mix of Journalism, PR agency and in-house roles preferable.
