Job description

ROLE

To

develop, implement, and monitor Assistive Technology Services in

the organization. Following the recommendation by AT team the

Special educator provides trial and training in the use of

Communication devices, computer access, activities of Daily Living

device, high technology power chair, environmental modifications,

writing and reading device, recreational devices in classroom set

up. The job role also includes developing learning goals,

contributing in IEP to incorporate the use of AT device,

undertaking and guiding research projects, contributing to proposal

for funding agencies, and carrying out certain administrative

responsibilities as directed by the head of the

department.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for building learning curriculum based on AT device so

that technology can be fully utilized during the academic (literacy

and numeracy) lessons also.

  • Participate in

designing outcome goals within the AT team keeping clients learning

level in mind.

  • Advocates for AT usage among
  • teachers e.g., lead change in shaping positivity in teachers'

    attitudes towards AT usage and parents and

    students

  • Train / upskill teachers on AT usage
  • together with other AT professionals i.e., scheduling sharing

    sessions, workshops, etc. on a regular basis

    Coordinate AT use in the SPED school i.e., oversee AT usage at the

    school level rather than just at the classroom / individual / ad-hoc

    level, in conjunction with school leaders, with consideration of

    the combined resources- both hardware and manpower- of school and

    AT Team.

  • Look at application of AT in
  • classroom context.

  • Alerts AT team if
  • prescribed AT device is a hindrance in learning in Classroom due to

    any structural barriers in the classrooms. For example- Lack of

    space in the classroom for powered mobility

    device.

  • Influence teachers on how to
  • facilitate student's use of AT in the class i.e., incorporating AT

    usage in functional classroom tasks and learning

    activities

  • Attend meetings, workshops, and
  • conferences related to research and practice in the areas of

    assistive technology (AT) and augmentative and alternative

  • communication (AAC);
  • Coordinate, prepare, and
  • share AT professional training programs to teaching

    staff

  • Prepare outgoing iPads or devices by
  • creating and managing iTunes account emails, passwords, and

    tracking data (users, case managers, iTunes accounts, etc.),

    returns incoming iPads or other devices to factory settings in

    preparation for reassignment.

  • Purchases AT
  • equipment for the department, raises purchase requisition form,

    inventories new devices, and keeps track of

    inventory.

  • Maintains and assures security of
  • the equipment in School by keeping account records, volume

    purchase, logs maintaining tags, and tracking equipment issued to

    students, and loan and return of equipment.

    Transport a variety of items (e.g., devices, equipment, supplies,

    etc.) for the purpose of providing materials to and from

    classroom

  • Liaise with specialized staff about
  • student needs and equipment to meet the Individual Educational

    Programs (IEPs) of students and relay info to class

    teachers.

  • Assembles AT equipment
  • / devices

    REQUIREMENTS

    Diploma in special Education from NIE or from any other recognized

    school.

  • A recognized local polytechnic
  • diploma

  • At least three years' experience with
  • clients with multiple disabilities

  • At least
  • two years' experience in developing learning goals based on AT

    device provided and experience in liaising between special

    education teacher and AT professionals.

  • At
  • least one year of experience to train the teachers on using devices

    in class effectively.

  • An Assistive Technology
  • Professional Certificate from RESNA will be an added

    advantage.
