Roles & Responsibilities
Responsibilities
- Identify, scope, and prioritize flow assurance sampling requirements by systematically evaluating flow assurance risks (e.g., hydrates, wax, asphaltenes, scale, and emulsions), integrating them into the broader well test and sampling programs, and ensuring alignment with reservoir engineering objectives and data quality assurance protocols.
- Establish and maintain cross-disciplinary consistency of PVT data by verifying the accuracy, completeness, and harmonization of datasets across flow assurance, process engineering, reservoir engineering, and production technology disciplines. Oversee PVT model migration and deck integration, ensuring smooth transitions and traceability between multiple versions while managing uncertainties in fluid characterization.
- Characterize and determine the fundamental physical properties of complex hydrocarbon mixtures (C1–C6 fractions, C7+ characterization, and acid gases such as H₂, H₂S, CO₂) along with water and hydrate systems. Develop and validate thermodynamic phase envelopes and compositional models for multiphase and multi-component mixtures under varying pressure–temperature regimes.
- Formulate and document advanced operational procedures aligned with integrated flow assurance strategies, system design constraints, and equipment performance envelopes. Provide engineering support during normal production, transient conditions (shut-in, start-up, restarts), abnormal operations (blockage remediation, blowdown, pigging / sweeping), and subsea processing / boosting scenarios.
- Develop proactive management strategies for flow assurance threats across the production lifecycle, including liquid inventory management, wax deposition, hydrate formation, asphaltene precipitation, gelling, scaling, sand production, and other flow-limiting phenomena. Implement monitoring and intervention plans to safeguard production continuity.
- Provide expert flow assurance input to the development of safeguarding philosophies and the specification of protection systems, balancing requirements for operability, integrity, safety, energy efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
- Predict and analyze transient multiphase flow behaviour using advanced dynamic simulation tools to evaluate minimum stable flowrates, hydraulic capacities, pressure / temperature transients, liquid holdup, slugging characteristics, thermal performance, and pipeline sweeping or pigging operations, incorporating high-fidelity modeling of both steady-state and transient flow regimes.
- Evaluate, conceptualize, and select robust production system configurations, considering the trade-offs of subsea processing, topside facilities, tie-back architectures, and integrated pipeline networks, while accounting for reliability, operability, cost, and flow assurance risk exposure.
- Design and optimize chemical treatment strategies, incorporating lifecycle economics, system compatibility, and downstream processing impacts. Anticipate potential chemical interactions, compatibility issues, and degradation products that may affect both flow assurance and downstream operability.
- Identify and mitigate corrosion risks (internal and external), integrating predictive corrosion models, inhibitor strategies, and inspection / monitoring technologies into flow assurance management frameworks.
- Perform advanced hydraulic and thermal design of pipelines and transmission systems, including sensitivity analyses for erosional velocity, multiphase slugging, thermal transients, and insulation strategies to mitigate hydrate or wax risks.
- Define, monitor, and continuously assess key system performance parameters through advanced instrumentation, data acquisition, and real-time surveillance systems, specifying requirements for sampling, trending, and predictive analytics for condition-based maintenance.
- Provide high-level operational readiness and start-up support, assisting operations teams in the commissioning and ramp-up of production systems, ensuring seamless transition from design intent to stable operation.
- Develop, calibrate, and maintain high-fidelity flow assurance simulation models (steady-state and transient), benchmarking model predictions against as-built conditions and operational data. Ensure model accuracy within defined confidence intervals and document sources of uncertainty.
- Analyze the performance of operational systems to identify bottlenecks, reliability issues, or flow constraints. Lead optimization studies to enhance throughput, extend system life, and deploy cost-effective debottlenecking or capacity-enhancement solutions.
- Integrate cross-disciplinary inputs from process, mechanical, subsea, reservoir, and production engineering teams, synthesizing specialist knowledge into unified, consistent flow assurance strategies for project delivery.
- Embed flow assurance requirements within project design and execution plans, ensuring early consideration of operability constraints and long-term flow assurance risks in engineering, procurement, and construction activities.
- Define and implement capability development and training programs for the discipline, including technical mentoring, structured learning pathways, and career development support for national engineers under development programs.
