Roles & Responsibilities
The Animal Care Officer (ACO) is responsible for the treatment, care, and overall well-being of animals. The ACO plays an important role in ensuring the welfare of animals within the shelter and executing prescribed treatment and enrichment plans to support the well-being and potential adoption of the animals under their care.
The ACO works largely in a semi-outdoor environment and is required to be physically fit. On occasion, he / she may be required to support Animal Rescue Officers in housing difficult rescue cases.
The responsibilities include and are not limited to :
- Cleaning and sanitising animal enclosures and ensure that enclosures are safe for animals.
- Carrying out the feeding and medication of animals in the shelter.
- Washing and sterilising all feeding equipment
- Observing animals for signs of disease or injury to be surfaced to the Shelter Supervisor or Shelter Executive.
- Performing regular bathing of animals according to schedule and ensure animals are kept clean.
- Exercising animals and delivering enrichment programmes.
- Ensuring that checklists are appropriately completed to support the Shelter Supervisor in overall shelter management.
- Working closely with Shelter Manager and Animal Care Executives to execute enrichment, treatment and rehabilitation plans for animals.
- Conducting adoption appointments and screen potential adopters.
- Providing post-adoption support to adopters.
