The Surface Remanufacturing Technology (SRT) Group at SIMTech
is looking for a hands-on, motivated Research
Engineer to support both current and emerging
technologies in advanced surface processing and materials
characterisation. The successful candidate will contribute to
industry-driven and competitively funded projects with a strong
focus on practical application and operational continuity across
key technologies.
Key
Responsibilities :
Conduct metallurgical analysis through sample preparation
(such as sectioning, mounting, and polishing), etching, microscopy,
spectroscopy, and detailed documentation of microstructural
features
Assist in the setup, operation, and
troubleshooting of spray coating processes in collaboration with
experienced team members. These may include but are not limited to
thermal spray, cold spray, ultrasonic spray, vacuum-based spray
coating, and other related deposition techniques.
Contribute to the development and enhancement of new
surface engineering capabilities. This includes gaining hands-on
experience, conducting experimental trials, and supporting
knowledge build-up for advanced technologies such as vacuum plasma
spray and other future platforms.
Support and
perform regular operations of surface engineering system, including
equipment setup, process optimisation, and quality evaluation. This
includes systems such as Hydrodynamic Cavitation Abrasive Finishing
(HCAF) and other emerging finishing techniques.
Document procedures, analyse results, and prepare
technical reports or project presentations.
Assist in lab operations, procurement, safety compliance,
and 8S housekeeping
standards.
Job
Requirements :
Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering,
Materials Science, or related fields.
Hands-on
experience with material characterisation tools such as optical
microscopes and sample preparation equipment.
Exposure to surface engineering techniques (e.g.,
abrasive flow machining, thermal / cold spray, laser systems) and
material characterisation techniques (e.g. SEM, XRD, hardness
testing) is an advantage.
CAD / CAM experience
(SolidWorks, PowerMill) and basic programming (Python, MATLAB,
etc.) are a plus.
Critical thinking,
initiative, and ability to work both independently and within a
team.
Good communication skills and ability to
