Job Overview
This role involves leading and overseeing the Shipping division, ensuring that all chartering, operations, vetting / HSE, FFA, shipping analysis, and demurrage / claims activities are carried out in compliance with PetroChina’s code of conduct and within delegated authorities. The General Manager will drive commercial value by developing freight strategies, securing opportunities across clean, dirty, petrochemical, and gas markets, and providing critical shipping market insights to support trading decisions.
Job Description
- Lead and monitor the activities of the Chartering, Operations, Vetting / HSE, FFA & Shipping Analyst, and Demurrage / Claims teams, ensuring compliance with PetroChina's code of conduct and adherence to established limits and boundaries.
- Drive commercial value creation within the shipping division.
- Lead and develop freight strategy in liaison with Trading VPs, including time charter and COAs. Identify and secure opportunities in clean and dirty products as well as petrochemical / gas markets. Provide shipping market insights for existing exposures and when Trading teams are preparing bids.
- Determine the strategic direction of the Shipping organization to best support the business.
- Attend (in person or via Teams) regular scheduled meetings with HR, Legal, Risk, and Trading departments to review the Shipping team’s performance and ensure tasks are executed in line with expected requirements.
- Maintain close and constant dialogue between the Shipping desk and all other company desks, anticipating potential issues and ensuring prompt resolution of conflicts.
- Oversee the actions of the commercial and operational shipping teams to ensure they act within the professional limits of their DOAs.
- Organize meetings with external counterparts (shipowners, shipbrokers, ship agents, bunker providers, STS providers, IT service providers).
- Report to Line Manager and Senior Management on the full scope of Shipping desk activities, presenting alternatives and plans for optimization and future development.
- Manage charter party risks, including ship vetting / STS policy and procedures.
- Allocate and manage staff resources to meet business needs, providing strong leadership to ensure a motivated and effective team.
- Monitor process performance by collecting and analyzing key KPIs, ensuring proactive two-way communication with business divisions.
Job Requirements
Degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Logistics Management, or equivalent.Background in chartering, shipping commercial operations, or maritime law.Strong commercial orientation and proven track record (e.g., freight trading, commercial chartering).Minimum 10 years of experience in shipping, preferably with multicultural team management exposure.Strong leadership skills with demonstrable experience in the shipping industry, including substantive involvement in energy trading.Please write in with a full resume, present and expected salary, contact telephone number(s) and any other relevant information to :
